Kagame, Boko Move to Cut Trade Barriers
President Paul Kagame and President Duma Boko have committed to deepening bilateral ties by removing investment barriers and streamlining economic cooperation between Rwanda and Botswana.
Speaking during a joint press conference in Botswana on May 6, President Kagame emphasized that the partnership between the two nations is anchored in a common vision for development and tangible results.
“What defines the relationship between Rwanda and Botswana is not only friendship, but also a shared sense of purpose,” President Kagame stated. “This is evident in the way we work together, and in our commitment to practical outcomes.”
The two leaders are targeting specific sectors to ease the movement of people and capital.
Kagame noted that both governments are working to finalize agreements that will simplify business operations and travel.
“Across areas such as air connectivity, visa facilitation, and double taxation, our objective is to remove barriers, and to create a more predictable environment for investment and collaboration,” Kagame said.
Beyond trade logistics, the Rwandan Head of State praised Botswana’s economic model, particularly its management of the mining sector.
He highlighted Botswana’s success in ensuring that its mineral wealth directly impacts the lives of its citizens.
“Botswana has consistently demonstrated what forward-looking leadership can accomplish,” Kagame noted.
“The way you have managed your natural resources, particularly diamonds, reflects a deliberate effort to retain value, and translate it into real benefits for your people. This is an approach that strongly resonates with us.”
