Mbappé Condemns Paraguayan Senator for Racist Comments After World Cup Win
France captain Kylian Mbappé has condemned a Paraguayan senator for making racist remarks on social media following France's victory over Paraguay in the World Cup round of 16.
The Dispute erupted after Mbappé scored the winning goal to knock Paraguay out of the tournament.
In response, Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla posted a series of comments on social media attacking the French forward's origins, education, and appearance.
Mbappé hit back at the politician, calling Amarilla a “despicable woman,” and “unworthy” of representing her country.
“Through your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup,” Mbappé said in response.
Amarilla has since deleted the post, stating she regretted using “the same insults” she has faced as a mixed-race person. However, the senator demanded an apology from the forward, accusing Mbappé of gender-based violence and warning she will sue him if he doesn't take back his comments.
The incident sparked an immediate sporting and diplomatic backlash.
On Monday, the French Football Federation (FFF) called Amarilla's remarks “utterly abhorrent” and “unacceptable,” confirming it will refer the matter to prosecutors.
France’s political leadership quickly backed the team captain.
Sports Minister Marina Ferrari posted on X: “By targeting Kylian Mbappé, the senator is attacking everything our captain embodies and everything our country stands for: liberty, equality and fraternity,”
French President Emmanuel Macron also defended the striker on social media, writing: “One more goal for Kylian Mbappé, this time against racism,” while adding the player has his "full support."
Paraguay's government swiftly disowned the lawmaker's comments, branding them “contrary to the values and principles that inspire peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity that our country promotes.” Officials emphasized that her views do not represent the government or the Paraguayan people.
The disputes follow pre-match racial tensions.
Before Saturday’s kickoff, former Paraguay goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert labeled the French team “a squad from Africa.”
FFF President Philippe Diallo hit back at the comments, stating Chilavert “was once a great goalkeeper” who has now “fallen into disgrace.”
