The United States has announced visa restrictions targeting several senior Rwandan officials, accusing them of contributing to instability in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

In a statement released on Friday, 6 March, the United States Department of State said the measures are aimed at individuals believed to be fueling violence by continuing to support the M23 armed group and by violating commitments under the Washington Accords. According to the statement, such actions are undermining efforts to restore peace and stability across the Great Lakes region.

The announcement follows earlier sanctions imposed by the United States on the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and four of its senior commanders over their alleged role in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Washington also called on all parties to fully implement the terms of the agreement. The United States urged the DRC to immediately neutralize the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) armed group and its associated factions, while calling on Rwanda to withdraw its troops and military equipment from Congolese territory.

The State Department warned that individuals responsible for obstructing a sustainable peace in the region — whether directly or indirectly — will face consequences. It added that lasting stability is essential for unlocking the vast economic potential of the Great Lakes region and improving the lives of millions affected by years of conflict.

As of the time of publication, the government of Rwanda had not yet publicly reacted to the announcement of the visa restrictions.
