Arab League chief urges Iran to end attacks, respect Arab sovereignty
The new Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil Fahmy, called on Iran on Monday, July 13, to stop attacks on Arab countries and respect their sovereignty during his first speech as head of the regional organization in Cairo.
The new secretary-general made the remarks in his first address after taking office as head of the pan-Arab organization in Cairo.
“Respecting the sovereignty of Arab states remains a decisive principle that we do not accept any violation of,” the former Egyptian foreign minister said, calling Iran’s attacks on Mideast countries “the gravest threats.”
“I repeat for the third time: any harm to the security of one Arab state is harm to the security of all Arab states.”
Fahmy said that although Israel did not permit him to enter the occupied West Bank to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the Arab League would continue seeking access.
“The issue will remain one of the priorities of the league and one of my personal priorities.”
The Egyptian diplomat began his term as regional tensions continued to rise.
A memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran faced uncertainty after the US attacks on Iran and Iranian attacks on Gulf Arab countries resumed.
Conflicts in Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, and Sudan also continued. The Arab League has frequently worked to support diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing crises across the region.
