AUC chair backs China-Pakistan peace initiative for Middle East
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has officially welcomed a joint Five-Point Initiative from China and Pakistan aimed at restoring peace and stability to the volatile Gulf and Middle East region.
In a statement released Saturday, April 03, on X account, the Chairperson endorsed the diplomatic framework advanced by the People’s Republic of China and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. He characterized the move as a vital step toward cooling regional tensions that threaten global security.
“The Initiative constitutes a timely and constructive contribution to ongoing international efforts to de-escalate tensions and advance a political and diplomatic pathway,” the AUC Chairperson noted.
The initiative prioritizes an immediate cessation of hostilities, the protection of civilians, and the safeguarding of vital maritime corridors. Youssouf emphasized that these elements are essential to containing the current crisis before it expands further.
Expressing deep concern over the regional escalation, the Chairperson highlighted the direct consequences for the African continent.
“Its effects are already being felt globally, including on energy supply chains, food systems, and economic stability—particularly in Africa, a continent already confronting multiple and intersecting challenges,” he stated in statement.
The Chairperson called for all involved parties to exercise maximum restraint and act in strict accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter.
He maintained that “a durable resolution can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiated solutions.”
