The emergency session, steered by EAC Deputy Secretary General Hon. Andrea Aguer Ariik Malueth, focused on mapping out protocols to protect major transit hubs and prevent cross-border virus transmission.

According to EAC, key interventions currently under active consideration include a "regional coordinated response/harmonisation of Ebola surveillance and protective measures at airports, ports and land border crossings."

To ensure rapid diagnostic capabilities and streamlined medical logistics, regional technical teams discussed the deployment of mobile laboratories alongside the "establishment of an EAC Regional Taskforce to coordinate the regional Ebola response."

The community notes that the regional body is also prioritizing the "mobilisation of resources to strengthen preparedness and response efforts.”

The technical strategies drafted during today's senior official’s session will be handed over directly to the region's top health policymakers tomorrow for final review and the deployment.

"The Ministers & Coordination Committee are scheduled to meet tomorrow afternoon to review the recommendations and issue policy guidance and directives on the proposed regional actions," the EAC stated.
