South African police are investigating the murder of a 29-year-old Malawian national and other two injuries after a protest of the "March and March" group turned violent on Friday, June 20, at the Jika Joe Informal Settlement in Pietermaritzburg.

The violence reportedly erupted after a woman claimed a Malawian killed her relative. This sparked a confrontation between the anti-immigrant protesters and the local migrant community.

Hundreds of Malawians are now camping in the city, which serves as the capital of KwaZulu-Natal. They fled their homes fearing further attacks, according to local reports.

Another group of displaced people is seeking shelter in nearby Durban. They are currently awaiting repatriation as government officials coordinate their return home.

The group "March and March" has intensified its campaign in recent months, setting a June 30 deadline for all undocumented foreigners to leave the country. While the ultimatum lacks legal authority, it has caused widespread panic among migrant communities.

Thousands of people from Ghana, Nigeria, and Mozambique are also fleeing their homes. Tensions continue to rise ahead of more planned demonstrations scheduled for the end of the month.

Law enforcement has increased its presence across all nine provinces to protect communities, critical infrastructure, and public spaces.

The police minister warned that authorities will not tolerate violence or armed protesters during the upcoming marches.
