António Guterres Condemns US–Israel Strikes on Iran, Warns of Uncontrollable Regional War
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has issued a strong warning over the rapidly escalating military confrontation in the Middle East, condemning both the use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran, which also resulted in Iran’s retaliatory attacks across the region.
Addressing the United Nations Security Council on Saturday, Mr. Guterres described the unfolding crisis as a “grave threat to international peace and security,” urging world leaders to act immediately to prevent the region from spiraling into a wider and potentially uncontrollable war.
“I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East,” he said. “Use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran and subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region undermine international peace and security.”
The Secretary-General warned that the current trajectory risks “igniting a chain of events that no one can control in the most volatile region of the world,” with devastating consequences for civilians and regional stability.
Call for Immediate Ceasefire and Return to Talks
Mr. Guterres called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation, stressing that continued military action could trigger a broader regional conflict with grave humanitarian consequences.
“Everything must be done to prevent a wider escalation of war,” he told the Council, strongly urging all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table — particularly on the future of Iran’s nuclear programme.
He noted that the joint US-Israeli military operation took place following indirect talks between Washington and Tehran mediated by Oman, warning that the escalation had effectively “squandered” an opportunity for diplomacy.
Invoking Article Two of the UN Charter, Mr. Guterres reminded Member States that they are obligated to refrain “from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State.”
“All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the United Nations,” he said, emphasizing that international humanitarian law must be upheld and civilians protected at all times.
He also called on countries to ensure nuclear safety amid rising tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.
Reiterating the UNs’ longstanding position, the Secretary-General underscored that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes.
“The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security,” he declared, urging unity within the international community to pull the region “back from the brink.”
As missile exchanges and military operations continue to reverberate across the Middle East, the UN chief’s message was clear: diplomacy — not force — remains the only path to lasting peace.
