The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has strongly condemned the missile and drone attacks launched by the Islamic Republic of Iran against the sovereign territories of Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

He calls the attacks a violation of sovereignty and warns they risk worsening an already precarious regional environment.

“These actions constitute a clear violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity and risk further destabilising the Middle East at a time when restraint is urgently required,” Mr. Youssouf said in a statement released Saturday, 28 February.

Beyond the political implications, the Chairperson underscored the human cost of further escalation, expressing solidarity not only with the governments but also with the people of the affected states, families, workers and communities now living under the shadow of uncertainty.

“The African Union Commission stands in full solidarity with the governments and peoples of the affected states,” he said, emphasizing the continent’s concern over developments that could trigger wider regional consequences.

The Chairperson called for immediate de-escalation, maximum restraint by all parties, and a swift return to dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable path to sustainable peace and regional stability.

In that earlier press statement, he emphasised the urgent need for restraint, adherence to international law and sustained dialogue, particularly given the risk of widespread repercussions on energy markets, food security and economic resilience.

Analysts note that the Chairperson’s condemnation “does not include a targeted rebuke of the U.S.–Israel strikes on Uran, which killed the Iranian Supreme Leader, destroyed infrastructure and left many homeless.

Global leaders have also issued varied reactions to those strikes, with some backing them and others urging diplomacy and restraint.

Whether the African Union’s diplomatic appeals will influence the trajectory of the conflict remains uncertain, as military operations and strategic calculations continue to drive actions on the ground.
