The temporary truce is scheduled to run from May 9 to May 11. Under the terms of the deal, Moscow and Kyiv will each exchange 1,000 prisoners of war.

President Trump, who announced the breakthrough on Truth Social, stated the agreement includes a total suspension of all "kinetic activity."

"This request was made directly by me, and I very much appreciate its agreement by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard-fought War," Trump wrote.

He added that negotiations are ongoing and that "we are getting closer and closer every day" to a final resolution.

President Zelenskiy confirmed the arrangement, emphasizing that humanitarian issues remain a priority for Kyiv.

"That is why today, within the framework of the negotiation process mediated by the American side, we received Russia's agreement to conduct a prisoner of war exchange in the format of 1,000 for 1,000," Zelenskiy wrote.

The ceasefire coincides with Russia’s May 9 Victory Day, marking the 1945 defeat of Nazi Germany. While the Soviet Union lost 27 million people in that conflict, this year’s parade in Red Square will notably feature no military equipment.

In a tongue-in-cheek decree, Zelenskiy "allowed" the parade to proceed, stating Ukrainian weapons would not target the site.

Russia had previously threatened a "massive missile strike" on Kyiv if the event were disrupted.
