Senegal's President Faye Takes Lead of ECOWAS
Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected as a new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) during the 69th Ordinary Session held on July 19, in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
The 46-year-old was elected to succeed President Julius Maada Bio, who handed over the leadership after his tenure.
Faye assumes the rotating chairmanship as the region battles rising security threats, democratic setbacks and growing instability across several member states.
His leadership also began amid strained relations between ECOWAS and Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, which withdrew from the bloc after military governments took power in the three countries.

As chairman, Faye is expected to prioritize rebuilding trust and cooperation among West African nations while keeping diplomatic engagement alive with the three breakaway states.
He is also expected to push reforms aimed at strengthening governance, improving accountability and expanding opportunities for young people to participate in shaping the region's future.
