Israel, Hezbollah Agree to Ceasefire Following Fresh Strikes
Israel and Hezbollah- a Lebanese Shia Islamist political party and paramilitary organization- agreed to a ceasefire that went into effect at 4 p.m. local time on Friday, June 19 stopping an exchange of cross-border fire earlier in the day through an internationally brokered deal.
The breakthrough was confirmed by a senior U.S. official, who disclosed the details to Reuters.
“Hezbollah and Israel have agreed to a ceasefire,” the official said on background.
Negotiators from the United States and Qatar worked out the details of the truce. The diplomatic deal was successfully finalized with assistance from Iran, according to the official.
The agreement successfully stopped a dangerous escalation of hostilities that occurred just hours before the implementation deadline.
“We understand that after the exchange of fire earlier today, Israel and Hezbollah are now in a ceasefire,” the official added.
