US-Iran ceasefire begins as Islamabad hosts for peace talks
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan has announced on Wednesday, April 8 that the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, along with their respective allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire across all conflict zones.
The announcement, made through the Prime Minister's official x account, marks a significant diplomatic breakthrough following weeks of regional hostilities. The truce is set to take effect across multiple fronts, specifically including the ongoing conflict in Lebanon.
"With the greatest humility, I am pleased to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, along with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere including Lebanon and elsewhere, effective immediately," Sharif stated.
The Prime Minister characterized the agreement as a "sagacious gesture" from the leadership of both nations.
To solidify the truce, Pakistan has invited delegations from Washington and Tehran to Islamabad this Friday, April 10, for high-level negotiations aimed at a permanent settlement.
"Both parties have displayed remarkable wisdom and understanding and have remained constructively engaged in furthering the cause of peace and stability," Sharif added.
The upcoming Islamabad Talks are expected to address the underlying disputes that triggered the recent escalation.
Sharif expressed optimism regarding the diplomatic track, stating, "We earnestly hope, that the 'Islamabad Talks' succeed in achieving sustainable peace and wish to share more good news in coming days!"
The ceasefire comes amid intense international pressure to de-escalate regional tensions that have impacted global energy markets and maritime security. While the Prime Minister’s announcement explicitly included Lebanon, reports from the region suggest the situation on the ground remains sensitive as monitoring of the truce begins.
