Iranian Attack Kills Two US Troops in Jordan as Washington Hits Back
Two US service members were killed, one remains missing and several others were injured after Iran launched ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan on Friday, prompting the United States to carry out another round of air strikes against Iran, military official said.
BBC reported that the US Central Command (Centcom) said four American service members were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan following the attacks but have since been discharged. Other personnel who suffered minor injuries have already returned to duty.
Military officials did not identify the two troops who were killed or disclose where or how the incident occurred.
On Saturday night, the US launched another wave of air strikes against Iran under the orders of President Donald Trump, marking the eighth consecutive night of military operations.
Centcom said the strikes were "designed to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz".
The military added that the attacks were intended to "swiftly punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched attacks against American service members in Jordan last night," without providing further operational details.
The latest escalation follows the collapse of a preliminary ceasefire reached less than a month ago.
Over the past week, Washington reinstated its blockade of Iranian ports, while Tehran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest oil shipping routes, according to BBC.
Late on Saturday, Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei accused the United States of violating the truce.
America's "repeated breaches" of the agreement had "laid bare a fundamental truth: the signature of the US president is utterly worthless and devoid of credibility", Khamenei said in a written statement.
He also accused Washington of trying to "escalate the conflict" and warned that Iran had "unforgettable lessons in store for it".
Earlier on Saturday, Jordan's military said it intercepted 10 Iranian missiles that entered its airspace overnight. Authorities reported no damage from the interceptions.
The latest fatalities raise the US military death toll in the conflict to 16. The increase comes after an American Navy pilot who had been missing earlier this month was officially declared dead, marking the second rise in the death toll this week.
