The United States has condemned a drone strike launched on the Mushaki trading center, located in Masisi Territory, North Kivu Province. The AFC/M23 coalition announced that the attack targeted civilians at the Mushaki market on the afternoon of May 8, leaving approximately 20 people dead and 57 others injured.

Lawrence Kanyuka, the spokesperson for AFC/M23, stated:

"Preliminary figures indicate that at least 20 civilians have died and 57 others are injured, including women, children, and other vulnerable individuals. This deliberate attack on civilians constitutes war crimes and crimes against humanity."

Kanyuka explained that this strike follows other attacks launched in various areas this month—including Gakenke, Rugezi, and Mikenke in Minembwe Commune, Kalenga in Masisi, and Lumbishi in Kalehe—all of which he claimed targeted civilians.

The AFC/M23 called on mediators and peace process supporters, including Qatar, the United States, and the African Union, to address this issue, emphasizing that the coalition reserves the right to halt these attacks.

On May 9, the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of African Affairs condemned the attack in Mushaki as well as the ongoing violence in South Kivu.

The Bureau stated:

"The US condemns today's drone strike in Mushaki, North Kivu, and the killings taking place near Uvira in South Kivu."

The United States urged "all parties must exercise maximum restraint, implement their ceasefire commitments, protect civilians, and commit to dialogue and de-escalation.
