Russian ballistic missiles struck residential areas across Kyiv overnight into Monday morning, killing at least 10 people and injuring 46 others in the second massive bombardment of the Ukrainian capital within a week.

According to BBC, Timur Tkachenko, Kyiv’s top military administrator, confirmed the casualties on Telegram, noting that five children were among the wounded.

Emergency teams are currently conducting rescue operations at more than 20 locations across the city, focusing heavily on two districts where residential high-rise buildings sustained direct hits.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko reported that the ballistic missiles sparked fires in several apartment complexes.

The overnight strikes also destroyed local warehouses and a garage workshop. Visuals emerging from the capital on Monday morning show rescue teams combing through smoldering wreckage and charred cars in a search for survivors.

The deadly assault directly followed warnings issued hours earlier by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

On Sunday, Zelensky warned that intelligence showed a second wave of attacks was coming. This followed Thursday's drone and missile strikes, which killed 30 civilians and forced tens of thousands of residents to shelter in metro stations.

Ukraine has accused Moscow of intentionally targeting civilian infrastructure.

Conversely, Russian officials claimed their strikes targeted military and energy infrastructure in retaliation for recent Ukrainian attacks on power stations inside Russian territory.

Broader military action continued through the night, causing temporary power outages in the Russian-occupied Crimean city of Sevastopol.

The escalation comes a day before the high-stakes NATO summit in Turkey, where Zelensky is scheduled to hold critical face-to-face talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Ahead of the summit, Zelensky urged Western allies to send long-range weapons faster. He also asked the U.S. for licenses to build Patriot defense missiles inside Ukraine.

Expressing his frustration on X, Zelensky emphasized the human cost of diplomatic hesitation, writing: "Any delay with missiles for our air defense... means the loss of lives, and it encourages Russia to continue the war."
