South Africa: Coalition calls for stronger protection of documented foreign nationals
The Siyafana Sonke Action Campaign has called on the government to strengthen protection for documented foreign nationals who remained in South Africa legally but continued sleeping on pavements because feared returning to their communities over alleged migrant attacks.
Thousands of undocumented foreign nationals were repatriated to their countries of origin after protests against undocumented immigrants took place last month.
Siyafana Sonke activist Lubna Nadvi said: “We need to get shelter for all the people who are legally documented and forced to sleep out on the streets. We need to make sure that even those that are not legally in the country are treated with kindness.”
“And we need to become South Africans again because I think we have lost the spirit of Ubuntu. We need to rediscover our humanity,” Nadvi added.
