South Sudan starts voter registration ahead of December elections
South Sudan launched a nationwide voter registration and civic education campaign on Monday, July 27, to prepare citizens for the general election scheduled for December 22, the country's first national vote since independence in 2011.
The National Elections Commission (NEC)in South Sudan began the nationwide campaign as part of preparations for the upcoming general election.
NEC Chairperson Abednego Akok Kacuol said the campaign aimed to educate eligible voters about the registration process, polling procedures and their civic rights while encouraging broad participation across the country.
"The campaign is strictly non-partisan and designed to ensure that all eligible citizens understand the process and can participate effectively," Akok said during the launch in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.
NEC said the campaign would give priority to groups that often faced barriers to voting, including women, young people, persons with disabilities and internally displaced persons.
Vice President James Wani Igga urged citizens to register and participate peacefully, saying a credible voter register was essential for free and fair elections.
The commission said it would implement the campaign nationwide through partnerships with civil society organisations, media outlets, faith-based groups, political parties and community leaders to increase public awareness before the election.
