Aimable Karasira Dies Following Release From Prison
Aimable Uzaramba Karasira died at Nyarugenge Hospital on Thursday after reportedly taking an overdose of medication shortly after his release from Nyarugenge Correctional Facility.
The Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS) confirmed his death in an official statement issued by the Office of the Commissioner General on May 7.
According to the RCS, Karasira was rushed to hospital following a critical incident involving medication prescribed for mental health treatment. Authorities also said he had underlying health conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure.
In remarks to Radio/TV1, the RCS spokesperson, CSP Hillary Sengabo said Karasira had completed the release process and was outside the prison compound waiting for relatives to pick him up when the incident occurred.
During that time, he reportedly consumed medication in excess of the prescribed dosage and later collapsed.
“He was taken to hospital after being found consuming an amount exceeding the prescribed dosage of medication for his existing illness,” the spokesperson said.
Correctional authorities said they are awaiting a formal medical report to establish the exact cause of death.
“RCS is awaiting a medical report regarding the cause of this death,” the statement noted.
The RCS also extended condolences to Karasira’s family.
Karasira, a YouTube political commentator, was arrested on May 31, 2021, on charges related to denying and justifying the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, as well as inciting division through content published on social media.
In September 2025, he was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of instigating divisions.
In 2011, he launched the YouTube channel Ukuri Mbona (“The Truth as I See It”), where he published more than 240 videos focused largely on political and social commentary. The channel had accumulated about 67,000 subscribers.
