DRC Ebola outbreak becomes country’s largest as deaths rise above 1,500
The Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak has become the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the country, with 3605 confirmed cases and 1587 deaths as of July 30, according to the latest outbreak update by World Health Organization (WHO).
The health organisation also said that the number of infections and fatalities have been increasing in the country.
Health authorities and partners, including WHO, said the outbreak is intensifying due to “factors like insecurity, population displacement, and cross-border movement continue to hamper response efforts and increase the risk of further spread.”
The outbreak recorded its highest weekly figures in the past week, with 567 new cases and 296 deaths, highlighting the rapid pace at which the virus is spreading, WHO updates shows.
National authorities, WHO, and other partners are currently carrying out response measures, including disease surveillance, medical support, and community interventions.
However, health officials said a major expansion of response operations is needed across all areas to bring the outbreak under control and prevent further loss of lives.
