Ghana to evacuate 1,000 more citizens from South Africa
Ghana began repatriating another 1,000 nationals from South Africa as anti-migrant sentiment continued to drive foreign nationals out of the country, the government announced.
Accra said special flights carrying the migrant workers would arrive on Sunday and Monday, 27 July, as the "final phase" of its evacuation programme.
The government had already repatriated more than 900 nationals. It also said it would seek compensation from the South African government for property and assets lost by its citizens.
Ghana petitioned the International Criminal Court to investigate attacks on foreign nationals, arguing that the incidents could amount to crimes against humanity.
Ghana and Nigeria also called on the African Union to place the issue on the agenda of the next African Union summit.
More than 160,000 foreign nationals had left South Africa since May following violent anti-immigrant protests.
South Africa has long attracted migrants from across Africa because of its relatively stronger economy, but rising unemployment has fueled hostility toward foreign workers.
