Houthis Warn Saudi Arabia Further Escalation Could Devastate Economy
Yemen’s Houthi leadership has warned Saudi Arabia that any further military escalation against the group could push the kingdom’s economy very close to collapse, while calling on Riyadh to lift its blockade of Yemen as the quickest path to de-escalation.
Yemen’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abdulwahid Abu Ras issued the warning Monday, July 27 saying the Houthis would respond to any escalation with a policy of “blockade for blockade” and “escalation for escalation.”
“The 'blockade for blockade' equation remains in place and has proven its effectiveness, and further escalation will be the final nail in the coffin of the Saudi economy,” Abu Ras said, according to statements carried by Iran’s Tasnim News Agency.
Abu Ras said Saudi Arabia had previously “bet on the United States and lost,” arguing that relying on allied forces would bring Riyadh even greater losses.
He said Washington had failed to achieve its objectives in Yemen despite deploying its full military capabilities and accused Saudi Arabia of refusing to learn from that experience.
Mohammed Al-Farah, a member of the Houthi political bureau, directly called on Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman to end the Saudi-led blockade of Yemen.
“The closest and least costly solution for you is to lift the blockade on Yemen and stop the aggression against it,” Al-Farah said.
Another Houthi political bureau member, Abdullah Al-Nuami, accused Saudi Arabia of continuing to evade responsibility for the blockade while maintaining communications with Yemen.
“The problem is that Saudi Arabia has no serious intention of taking its hands off the Yemeni people,” he said. “Yemen is moving forward under the equations of 'escalation for escalation' and 'blockade for blockade,' and the ball is now in Saudi Arabia's court.”
Al-Nuami said the Houthis were fully prepared to respond to any Saudi escalation, whether carried out directly or through allied forces operating inside Yemen.
