The Head of MONUSCO, James Swan, concluded a diplomatic visit to Goma on Friday, June 12, where he "reaffirmed the Mission’s continued engagement in support of peace efforts in eastern DRC, in line with MONUSCO’s mandate under United Nations Security Council resolution 2808 (2025)."

During his stay, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General held separate meetings with representatives of the Alliance Fleuve Congo/Mouvement du 23 mars and the commander and other members of the Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism Plus (EJVM+).

The high-level talks focused on advancing ceasefire monitoring and verification arrangements in the volatile region, according the organisation’s statement.

Swan also conducted internal reviews with MONUSCO and United Nations colleagues.

The teams evaluated the shifting security, political, and humanitarian dynamics on the ground to map out the Mission’s operational priorities, including the ongoing Ebola response.

Addressing broader diplomatic tracks, the UN envoy emphasized the critical need for alignment across national, regional, and international peace frameworks, specifically pointing to the active Washington, Doha, and African Union-led processes.

Following these comprehensive engagements, Swan "underscored MONUSCO’s continued readiness, within its mandate, to support implementation of these peace processes."
