Iran's late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated by Israel and the United States on February 28, will be buried on July 9 after conflict forced a months-long delay, state television reported Saturday.

The final burial is set to take place in Khamenei's hometown, the northeastern holy city of Mashhad.

The burial will follow a three-day national funeral ceremony starting in the capital city of Tehran on July 4, before moving to the holy city of Qom on July 7.

The July 4 commencement of the national mourning period directly coincides with the 250th anniversary of Independence Day in the United States.

The final rites were originally scheduled for March. However, officials postponed the proceedings due to the outbreak of war following the fatal February strikes.

In early March, Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, succeeded his father to become the third supreme leader since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979.

Mojtaba, who was wounded in the same strikes that killed his father and numerous other officials, has not made a single public appearance since his appointment. He currently communicates with the nation exclusively through statements attributed to him.
