Police fired tear gas at demonstrators in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, on Friday 13. The protesters marched to denounce rising insecurity and a wave of kidnappings affecting many parts of the country.

The protest took place on Democracy Day. Activists and residents joined the march to call on authorities to do more. They want the government to stop armed groups, banditry, and mass abductions in rural areas and schools.

Security forces blocked roads near the Presidential Villa. They used tear gas to disperse the crowd during the event.

Activist Omoyele Sowore joined the demonstrators. He accused the government of failing to address the security crisis. He also demanded stronger action against armed groups.

Nigeria continues to face security challenges in several regions. These include jihadist violence in the northeast and armed banditry in the northwest. Kidnappings for ransom also happen frequently across different parts of the country.
