Iran has delivered its official response to a 14-point United States proposal aimed at ending current hostilities, using Pakistan as a diplomatic mediator to facilitate the exchange.

The Iranian state news agency, IRNA, reported on Sunday that the first stage of the proposed negotiations will focus on ending active hostilities.

According to the report, Tehran’s response specifically highlighted the necessity of ensuring “maritime security” in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

The development follows a comprehensive 14-point plan sent by Washington earlier this week. Under the terms of the U.S. offer, Iran must agree to halt all uranium enrichment for at least 12 years and abandon the development of nuclear weapons.

Furthermore, Tehran would be required to surrender its estimated 440kg (970 pounds) stock of uranium enriched to 60 percent.

In exchange, the United States would gradually lift economic sanctions, release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets, and end its naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, confirmed that Pakistani authorities have officially received the document.

“The Pakistanis are confirming that they have received the Iranian response to the US proposal,” Hyder said. “Now Pakistan has received it, it will be important to see when it is communicated to the United States, and then to see the reaction from Washington.”

The diplomatic move comes amid growing global pressure to resolve the conflict. The ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has crippled international trade and devastated the Pakistani economy.

“The stakes are very high: Pakistan is suffering economically as well. The fuel prices are sky-high,” Hyder reported.

Regional analysts suggest that Pakistan’s unique diplomatic position could be the key to a resolution.

“Pakistan has good relations with Iran, and it is in a favourable position with the Trump administration, so the likelihood of some sort of breakthrough is possible. The next few days will be critical and will depend on how favourably the US responds to whatever the Iranian response is,” Hyder noted.
