Iran’s Supreme Leader Vows Revenge for Father’s Killing
Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei vowed on Saturday, July 11 to avenge the killing of his father and predecessor, Ali Khamenei, as fresh threats between Tehran and Washington further undermined an already interim deal aimed at ending the latest conflict in the Middle East.
In a written statement broadcast on Iranian state television, Mojtaba Khamenei said Iranians would continue seeking revenge for the deaths of his father, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and other senior officials killed during the war triggered by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.
The renewed vow came as tensions between Iran and the United States deepened despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict from escalating further.
Earlier on Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iran of possible new missile strikes in a series of posts on Truth Social.
His comments followed Ali Khamenei's funeral, where mourners openly called for Trump's assassination.
Crowds also called for the killing of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump's remarks also came after senior U.S. officials demanded that Iran publicly declare the Strait of Hormuz open to international shipping and guarantee that vessels using the strategic waterway would not be attacked.
Tehran has rejected those demands, insisting that the Strait of Hormuz remains under Iranian control and maintaining that it should be allowed to impose charges on ships passing through the route.
The latest crisis follows days of U.S. airstrikes on Iranian targets and retaliatory Iranian attacks across the Middle East after Iran struck three ships in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week.
Although Trump declared on Friday that the ceasefire was over, he said Washington would continue negotiations with Tehran.
Diplomatic efforts nevertheless continued on Saturday, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveling to Oman for another round of talks. His visit came a day after Qatari mediators met Iranian officials in a separate bid to reduce tensions and revive negotiations amid the continuing regional violence.
