Abderrahim Fakir died after police tackled him to the ground in Bologna, prompting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to call for "the truth right to the end" on Tuesday after demonstrations followed the incident.

Rabat urged Italian authorities to "shed full light" on the incident and called for "responsibility to be established and that the full application of the required legal measures and procedures be guaranteed", the Moroccan Foreign Ministry said late Tuesday.

The ministry added that it was following the case "very closely" and "with concern".

Prosecutors opened an investigation on Monday, into the death of the 42-year-old man, who had moved to Italy at the age of five.

Fakir died after police restrained him face down on the ground for several minutes.

In a video recorded by a resident, Fakir was seen calling for help while two police officers held him on the ground as other first responders watched, according to media reports.

The two police officers and four first responders came under investigation by prosecutors.

Several thousand people took part in a demonstration in Bologna on Monday, according to local media images.

Clashes erupted between protesters and law enforcement officers, leaving 64 officers injured, according to police headquarters.

News channel Sky TG24 reported that 11 protesters were also injured.
