RURA Penalises 100 operators for illegal fare hikes
The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) has penalised nearly 100 public transport operators for overcharging passengers, following the implementation of newly approved transport fares across the country.
In a statement released Friday, April 17, the regulator confirmed it is closely monitoring adherence to revised rates and taking immediate action against operators who fail to comply.
The enforcement follows a recent shift in fuel prices and subsequent transport tariff adjustments.
“We continue to urge all operators to comply with the approved fares and to clearly display them at passenger boarding points and inside vehicles,” the regulator said.
The restriction comes after petrol prices were increased to Rwf2,938 per litre, up from Rwf2,303. However, diesel prices remained unchanged at Rwf2,205.
Following these adjustments, RURA set the base fare in Kigali at Rwf59.28 per passenger per kilometre, while intercity fares were adjusted to Rwf41.58.
Despite the spike in petrol costs, the Ministry of Infrastructure maintained that public transport rates should remain stable because most large-capacity vehicles rely on diesel.
Minister of State in charge of Infrastructure, Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye, stated that government measures are in place to help stabilise transport costs for passengers using public transport services.
RURA has encouraged passengers to remain vigilant and report any fare irregularities through its toll-free line 2222 or its official social media platforms.
