EAC Health Ministers Call Emergency Meeting to Fight Ebola Outbreak
East African Community (EAC) Health Ministers will convene a high-level emergency virtual meeting on June 1–2, 2026, to launch urgent regional actions to curb an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
The Extra-Ordinary Virtual Meeting of the Sectoral Council of Ministers responsible for Health comes amid rising safety concerns as the region faces an outbreak fueled by the "Bundibugyo virus strain."
This ministerial gathering is the latest in a series of swift interventions by the EAC Secretariat, which has already intensified regional coordination and preparedness measures to prevent the virus from spreading further.
Health experts are now fast-tracking medical interventions through the TWG on "Harmonisation of Regulations for potential Ebola vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics" to ensure the region can deploy medical countermeasures quickly and uniformly.
