The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has hosted a delegation of officers from the Nigerian National Defence College during a six-day study tour in Rwanda focused on ecotourism, security, national development, and post-conflict recovery.

The delegation, made up of 15 officers, visited RDF Headquarters in Kimihurura on Tuesday as part of a programme aimed at giving participants firsthand insight into Rwanda’s development model and its transformation journey following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

RDF Chief of Defence Staff Mubarakh Muganga thanked the Nigerian National Defence College for choosing Rwanda as a destination for the study tour and highlighted the growing cooperation between the two countries’ defence institutions.

He said the partnership has continued to strengthen, particularly in the areas of military training, education, and exchange programmes.

“I would like to reaffirm the Rwanda Defence Force’s commitment to strengthening existing cooperation with the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly the National Defence College, in training, education, and exchange programs,” Gen Muganga said.

Brig Gen Patrick Karuretwa, Director General of International Military Cooperation at the Ministry of Defence, said the visit provides an opportunity for both sides to exchange experiences and deepen their understanding of emerging security challenges affecting African countries.

During the visit, the delegation received a briefing on the evolution and transformation of the RDF after the genocide. The officers also toured the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Campaign Against the Genocide Museum as part of efforts to understand Rwanda’s history and recovery process.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Commodore Ebo Adegoke Timothy praised Rwanda’s progress in national transformation and socio-economic development.

He said the engagements with senior RDF officials offered valuable lessons on how Rwanda has used good governance, security, and ecotourism policies to drive national development and resilience.

The delegation is expected to visit different parts of Rwanda during the remainder of the tour to support their academic research on security, development, and resilience.
