UN Awards Service Medals to Rwandan Peacekeepers in CAR
Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) were awarded UN Service Medals on Thursday, June 18, for their dedication, professionalism, and contribution to peace and security.
The colorful ceremony was held at the Socatel M'Poko Camp in the capital city of Bangui-Central African Republic (CAR).
The medals were presented to members of the Rwandan Battalion One (RWANBATT-1). These troops have been deployed across various operational sectors to safeguard conflict-affected communities, facilitate humanitarian assistance, and restore local security.
Valentine Rugwabiza, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of MINUSCA, presided over the event.
She stated that the medals symbolize the United Nations’ deep appreciation for the resilience and commitment shown by the Rwandan contingent during a high-stakes deployment.
Praising their operational readiness, Rugwabiza said: “Your contribution was especially significant during the electoral period and throughout the presidential campaign.”
“In a context requiring heightened security and constant readiness, RWANBATT-1 successfully supported protection operations across the country and helped create the conditions necessary for citizens to exercise their democratic rights peacefully.”
Lieutenant Colonel Paul Gasasira, the Commanding Officer of RWANBATT-1, expressed his gratitude to the UN leadership for the recognition.
He reaffirmed the battalion’s firm commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards while working toward lasting peace and stability in the Central African Republic.
