French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the presidential palace in Paris on Friday, 10 July, at the start of Ramaphosa's three-day visit to France.
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss regional security, including conflicts in Africa, and broader global issues affecting countries.
According to the French presidency, the visit to France was also intended to reinforce the longstanding partnership between the two countries
Ramaphosa's visit came less than one month after South Africa was removed from the guest list for the G7 summit in Évian.
The presidency initially said Ramaphosa had been excluded because “sustained pressure from the United States”, a claim Ramaphosa later said was incorrect..
Ramaphosa was also scheduled to co-chair discussions at UNESCO on quality education and meet French business leaders.
To day, he will take part in commemorations marking the 110th anniversary of the Battle of Delville Wood in northern France, where more than 2,500 South African soldiers died.
